Mountain Gorillas - Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda – 2017. After completing a two week Habitat for Humanity Global Village Build in Zambia I traveled to Uganda to do a Mountain Gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which is in southern Uganda. From Zambia we flew into Kigali, Rwanda then drove into southern Uganda were we spent a night at Bakiga Lodge in Ruhija which is inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and a short drive to the staging point for the Gorilla trekking. We spent at least an hour and a half walking through the jungle to a family that consisted of an alpha male, five females and two babies, one 2 months old and the other about a year old. The family is known as the Kyagurilo Mukiza Gorilla Group. We followed the family for about an hour as they passed through the jungle frequently pausing to eat. Mountain gorillas are found in only two regions in Africa. One group are in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda and the other group is spread over three national parks in the Virungas mountain region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. They are considered critically endangered with an estimated population of only 880.
